The 500-year-old village of Temmes – culture, stories and, atmosphere

Temmes – Northern Ostrobothnia’s Village of the Year 2024. The historic village of Temmes in Tyrnävä, known for its theater and lively cultural life, is located on the beautiful riverside of River Temmesjoki.

Culture

The history and culture of the village can be experienced in the idyllic and atmospheric travel destinations cherished by the villagers. Among the well-known cultural figures, the academician Martti Haavio, also known as the poet P. Mustapää (1899–1973), was born in Temmes. Jewelry designer Liisa Vitali's nature-themed jewelry has delighted people for more than five decades.

Idyllic riverside

Already in the old days, Temmes was known as a stopping place along the Savo salt road. Over time, the salt road – travelled by kings, emperors and cowherds alike – became what is now known as Highway 4. The distance to the center of Oulu is only 25 minutes, and thanks to the good transport connections, the locals are able to live in an idyllic riverside village and still enjoy all that the Oulu economic area has to offer.

Disc golf

The 12-hole disc golf course is a forest course located alongside a lit fitness trail (Mölloperäntie 10, Temmes).

Caravan Area

Just north of the village, right next to Highway 4, is Matkaparkki Temmes Caravan. The site is surrounded by the open fields and riverside landscapes of the plains. The caravan area is open from May to the end of October, but overnight stays are possible year-round. A large lean-to with a campfire site and ready-to-use firewood is available. An accessible toilet with a handwashing station serves travelers. A new pump track provides fun for children.

Near the caravan area, you'll find wonderful cultural destinations, the Temmes Museum Area, the Temmes Meijeri (Dairy), and the Temmes Pillar Church. The Meijeri building houses the Hinkkilä buy-and-sell shop. The scenic routes and trails in the area are ideal for cycling, running, and walking. The disc golf course is less than three kilometers away.
