Rock Art Visitor Centre Astuva

Located in Ristiina, the Astuva Rock Art Centre offers a captivating journey into the world of prehistoric rock paintings at Astuvansalmi. The centre provides a unique opportunity to explore Finland’s ancient history through cutting-edge technology and immersive storytelling.

The exhibition brings the past to life with an interactive time-travel experience. 3D models and multisensory content reveal insights into the daily life of our ancestors who created the paintings, the formation of Lake Saimaa, and the cultural significance of the prehistoric artifacts found in the area. A dedicated knowledge room deepens the understanding of rock art through the lenses of research, landscape, and cultural heritage.

Outside, interpretive signs guide visitors through the layered history of Ristiina. The centre is housed in a restored 18th-century building, originally constructed in 1739 as a Colonel Residence during the Swedish allotment system. The house played a significant role in Finnish military history as the location of the country’s first officer training centre, founded by Georg Magnus Sprengtporten in 1777.

Restored by local volunteers, the historic building is more than just a museum – it also serves as a vibrant meeting place for locals and visitors alike, celebrating regional history and heritage.
